To answer these questions, he retraces the history of the concept of the universal from its invention as an aspect of Roman citizenship, through its neutralization in the Christian idea of salvation, to its present day manifestations. This raises the question of whether the search for the universal is a uniquely Western preoccupation: do other cultures, like China, even have a notion of the universal, and if so, how does it differ from ours? Having considered the meaning of the concept in the East and West, Jullien argues that, if communication between cultures is to be meaningful, facile assumptions of universal values and complacent relativism need to be examined. It follows, therefore, that dialogue between cultures should not begin with issues of identity and difference, but rather by considering divergence and profusion. By no longer simply assuming universality, we allow for greater self-reflection.

SUSAN MATHESON grew up in Nova Scotia with a passion for baking. Eventually, she trained as an architect in Canada and England, and has maintained a private practice in both Manhattan and London for the past fifteen years. She specializes in building and renovating houses in historic districts.

LAUREN CHATTMAN is a cookbook author and former professional pastry chef who has written nine books, including, most recently, Icebox Cakes. She has also collaborated with former White House pastry chef Roland Mesnier on Dessert University and with Daniel Leader on Local Breads. Her recipes have appeared in Food & Wine, Bon App�tit, Cook’s Illustrated, the New York Times, Metropolitan Home, Family Circle, and Redbook, and she has appeared on the Today show and QVC. She lives with her husband and two daughters in Sag Harbor, New York.

Very thoughtful and thorough

My latest book acquisition arrived today and I am so excited. Last year we designed and built a gingerbread house using the instructions from "The Professional Pastry Chef" and it was much more complicated than I had anticipated. Not hard, just complicated. Planning a design for even a simple A-frame house was very tedious, making sure everything would line up and the roof would overhang and everything. Then decorating: what candy to buy, how to use it effectively. It came out cute, but doing it again was daunting.

I'm not blown away by any of the designs I see in "The Gingerbread Architect", but I am impressed by their thoroughness. They've planned out the steps, day by day, into reasonable chunks of work; they list exactly the ingredients and candies you need to recreate their designs; they have templates for exactly the pieces you need to cut out, to scale; they list alternate ideas and decor, how to adapt the style, and pitfalls they had with certain designs or decor choices. And I was impressed with some of their creative use of materials, particularly decorating with upside down ice cream cones for trees and green rice krispy treats for shrubberies.

All in all, I feel a lot more sanguine about tackling this holiday craft with this book in hand.

Well, it is Christmas day and I'm still not done with this project. Where on earth do you buy hard candies these days? The recipes for the dough and the icing were similar to others I've used (Bo Frieburg) and the directions were easy to follow. I had a snafu with the pattern pieces; I had absolutely no idea that 400% larger was so big, and neither did the folks at Kinkos. With the size of the Kinkos bill, I think the pattern pages could have been laid out more efficiently. In the end, I threw out the Kinkos copies anyway, because a gingerbread house over 14" tall would overwhelm my dining room. I resized the pages to only 300% and went from there.

Cut out, baking, and assembly have been moderately straightforward. I chose to do the Victorian on the book cover (my son picked it) which is a medium difficulty plan. The directions did NOT point out that I shouldn't have cut out the doors, which is annoying, since I then had to cut separate door pieces and tack them on. It was also unclear exactly how much crushed candy should be added to the window spaces and my windows look thin and lumpy.

Altogether, however, it is a very handsome house and I would never have designed such a complex house on my own. My son is thrilled to bits, the air smells like gingerbread, and I didn't have to think of all the details myself. Compared to a ready-to-make kit, making a gingerbread house from scratch is a labor of love (and money). But this book did do a nice job of setting it out, step-by-step, and taking away the guesswork.

Really liked this book, great insight, well reasearched

I have to admit that I'm a big fan of Tesla and Elon Musk. I thought I already knew everything there was to know about Tesla. I picked up this book while on holidays as some kind of, as I thought, lite reading.
I was really surprised by the detail and the depth of research that the author has put in while writing this book. I particularly enjoyed some of the technical descriptions of the physics behind the batteries. Surely these won't qualify you to take over the CTO job at Tesla but give you a better understanding of how Tesla and other EV's work.
The only problem that I would see with this kind of book is that the Tesla story is pretty much still being written in front of our eyes so the book might be 'old news' in a relatively short time - unless the author makes the effort to periodically update it with the latest and greatest from the California boys.
A highly recommended read.

Even though I'm completely immersed in the EV industry, I learned a lot about Tesla from reading this book. It is very comprehensive. All of the direct quotes from the company's leaders give a fascinating insight into their decision making process.

I'm often annoyed when I read news outlets falsely compare Tesla to other "tech" companies. This book does an excellent job at highlighting what makes Tesla so unique. It's an incredible success story.

Truly enjoyed reading this book, it satisfied my curiosity about Tesla's history so far

This book has been a real pleasure to read, from the first chapters recalling the early EVs (from the times of horse carriages) to the latest struggles of Tesla around dealership issues in the US. I had been curious for a while about the other persons participating in the Tesla adventure beyond Elon Musk, the book brought me facts and stories around them. It relates the glorious and less glorious moments, with a wealth of quotes and sources for those who want to dig deeper. The only frustrating thing about the book is the fact that it ends while the story is still going on full speed in real life... After finishing the book, I just have to continue following the journey through Twitter & co...

Informative for novice and experienced fans

Another DK must-have book for my Star Wars bookshelf. Note that this is not an entirely new work; it is mostly based on the 2011 edition. There are about 20 more pages in this new edition, but some characters from the 2011 edition do not appear in the new edition. And as you might guess from the cover, any new additions are from The Force Awakens. And as those characters' stories are still being told, their one-page bio here cannot be considered "definitive." But there is still plenty to recommend here, as the book is informative for fans of all interest levels and the layout and photos are up to DK's usual high standards.

Essential for the conoisseur. . .

This is one of the several Legman editions that
swept together a bunch of earlier printed sources
and blended them with a trove of oral tradions.
The one on my desk right now has a 1992 copyright,
but identical volumes are available from the late
1950's.
This one includes a list of sources and variants
and a limerick-slanted rhyming dictionary. If
you've ever wondered what could permissibly happen
to the young man from Saskatchewan, this is for you.
As for the poor fellow named Blaine, well you'll have
to look it up yourself.

As another reviewer has noted, virtually all the five-
line masterpieces in this collection are scurrulous. Except
for a few that are sadistic. Or disgusting. The prospective
reader should be reminded that:

A limerick's a rhyme anatomical
In a form that is most economical
And the good one I've seen
So seldom are clean
And the clean ones never are comical.

No "clean" limericks need apply

I found this book after I had read "Rationale of the Dirty Joke". As a fan of this poetic form, I have scanned many collections of limericks, but his has to be, by far, the most comprehensive. The introduction explains the origin of the limerick, and the following chapters categorize the limericks by topic, such as excrement, zoophily, abuses of the clergy, organs, etc. The Man from Nantucket, Alice and her dynamite stick and Dave the Hermit are present and accounted for, plus some multi-limerick sagas such as the Farter from Sparta. What you will NOT find is the "Lady from Niger", the "Lady from Guam", and the clean "Man from Nantucket". I have seen a shorter, less complete book attributed to G. Legman. Don't bother with that one- this is the book to have.

I had the unique opportunity to hear Dr. Ross lecture on many of the concepts in this book at Princeton Theological Seminary during a Youth Ministry Conference. Dr. Ross has a brilliant mind. His perspective is somehow modern and ancient simultaneously. He defines the Crucifixion of Christ in a new way and challenges us to consider who we worship and why we worship. Highly recommended.

Prophetic of today's political climate

Read this book if you want an excellent cultural critique of the world and perhaps a way to move forward in your Christian Faith. We get the glitter of the spectacle, but what offers true substance and nourishment? Jesus Christ!

I very much enjoyed the book. It's not an easy read, but an enlightening one that will leave you more thoughtfully prepared to live your Christian Faith well.

becoming a vegetarian and losing weight

The author of this book makes an interesting point - you can become as much a vegetarian as you want ( you can be part veg) and also you can re build your diet so that weight loss will occur as a natural result of eating the right way. A very fresh perspective, worth reading even if you stay a meat eater!

I downloaded this book because my daughter is interested in becoming a vegetarian and I want to make sure she does it in a healthy way. There is a lot of great info in this book along with some delicious-sounding recipes. We can't wait to try the Asian salad. Thanks!

Not an actual weight loss plan..but great for Vegetarian Newbies!

I'm giving this 5-stars because it's great advice for those wanting to become or new to Vegetariansim. However, I don't see it as a weight-loss book. Myself, like countless others I'm sure, went Vegetarian and in times of waiting too long to eat, ended up eating big delicious bowls of pasta instead of taking the time to have meals planned for moments like that. Thus, I've put on a few pounds and I was hoping this book would be an actual 'diet' to assist in weight-loss and have some type of plan laid out, which it doesn't. That disappointed me..but because the advice is good...she gets the 5-stars ;)
