Dr. Arvind Singhal (asinghal@utep.edu) is the Samuel Shirley and Edna Holt Marston Endowed Professor of Communication and Director of the Social Justice Initiative in UTEP’s Department of Communication. �He is also appointed, since 2009-2010, as the William J. Clinton Distinguished Fellow at the Clinton School of Public Service, Little Rock, Arkansas. �Singhal teaches and conducts research in the diffusion of innovations, the positive deviance approach, organizing for social change, the entertainment-education strategy, and liberating interactional structures. �His research and outreach spans sectors such as health, education, peace, human rights, poverty alleviation, sustainable development, civic participation, democracy and governance, and corporate citizenship.
Singhal is co-author or editor of 12 books – Health Communication in the 21st Century (2014); Inviting Everyone: Healing Healthcare through Positive Deviance (2010); Protecting Children from Exploitation and Trafficking: Using the Positive Deviance Approach (2009); Popular with a Purpose (2008); Communication of Innovations �(2006); Organizing for Social Change (2006); Entertainment-Education Worldwide: History, Research, and Practice (2004); Combating AIDS: Communication Strategies in Action (2003); The Children of Africa Confront AIDS: From Vulnerability to Possibility (2003);India’s Communication Revolution: From Bullock Carts to Cyber Marts (2001); Entertainment-Education: A Communication Strategy for Social Change (1999); and India's Information Revolution (1989). �Three of Singhal’s books won awards for distinguished applied scholarship. �In addition, he has authored some 170 peer-reviewed essays in outlets such as the Journal of Communication, Communication Theory, Communication Monographs, Health Communication, Management Communication Quarterly; Communication Quarterly, Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, Journal of Health Communication, and others.�
Singhal has won Top Paper Awards from the International and National Communication Associations (ICA and NCA) over a dozen times, and Ohio University’s Baker Research Award twice. � The Social Science Research Council & the International Communication Association recognized him as the winner of the Communication Research as Collaborative Practice Award in 2009, and the winner of the Communication Researcher as an Agent of Change Award in 2008. � The NW Communication Association honored him with the 2007 Human Rights Award for Steadfast Commitment to Social Justice, Social Change, and Freedom, and in 2005, USC’s Norman Lear Center honored him with the first Everett M. Rogers Award for Outstanding Contributions to Entertainment-Education.�
Singhal’s recent academic honors and appointments include President-Appointed Visiting Professor, Kumamoto (National) University, Japan (2012-13); Fulbright Hays Scholar, Slovakia (2012); Schomburg Distinguished Scholar, Ramapo College of New Jersey (2011), Commerzbank Foundation Professor, Chemnitz University of Technology, Germany (2009); Berkitt Williams Distinguished Lecturer, Ouachita Baptist University, Arkansas (2009); and Raushni Memorial Deshpande Distinguished Lecturer, Lady Irwin College, University of Delhi, India (2006). ��
Singhal's research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, The Dutch Health Research Council, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Ford Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, The National Science Foundation, The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, and others. He has served as an advisor to the World Bank, UN-FAO, UNICEF, UNDP, UNAIDS, UNFPA, U.S. Department of State; U.S. A.I.D., Family Health International, PATH, Save the Children, the BBC World Service Trust, International Rice Research Institute, Voice for Humanity, and private corporations such as Procter & Gamble (U.S.A and Thailand), Telenor AS (Norway), SpareBank (Norway), and others.�

Burnstein Hits Another Home Run

After the excellent job Scott Burnstein did with Motor City Mafia I knew this was going to be a winner. I was right! Scott did multiple interviews with agents to get the real deal on what was happening with the Family Secrets trial and other recent cases involving the Chicago Outfit. His narrative is a real easy read and he explained things well. As an attorney Scott covered all the bases with a fine tooth comb. For those who are interested, all the names and their stories are told here. "Joe Batters" Accardo, Joe Lombardo, Angelo LaPietra, Tony Spilotro, Nick and Frank Calabrese and more have their stories. But he doesn't just cover the bad guys, he also gives us a little info on the heroes, the FBI agents who develop cases so the criminals can be taken off the streets. So for those who are into what's been going on in the Outfit over the past 30 years, this book is for you.

Giancana does it again!!

A great book period!! I purchased this title along with the, "Family Secrets" book and let me tell you that I was knocked out by the one, two punch they delivered!! With all the books written about the NYC Mafia familys, etcetra, it was very refreshing to find these two jewels about the legendary CHICAGO OUTFIT.
A native Chicagoan myself, on top of being a Outfit buff, I loved every page and basically went through both of them in two weeks. Great read, it's strange but these two compliment each other very well, it would be a good idea to pick up both!
Alot of information in which once you get started you will not want to stop until the end.

I have enjoyed all of Mr. Giancana's books. I would have liked Mr. Giancana to go a bit more in depth regarding the Chicago Outfit. I would have liked more details of the "Family Secrets" trial. As a side note, I want to applaud Mr. Frank Calabrese Junior for standing up to his father. I know alot of people will perceive him as being a rat instead of someone that did the right thing. Society is a better place with Frank Sr. in prison.

I've read many HVAC books and have worked in HVAC for several years. This is the best HVAC book I've read. It is the only book actually taking advantage of computers. This books complements the "Heat Transfer" and "thermodynamics" books by Nellis/Klein - but also is useful as standalone book.

The knowledge level in this book is pretty high and very thorough. All necessary information is included, no unnecessary fluff. I devoured this book within a week because I could not stop reading it. Years ago I looked at HVAC books and always thought they are missing the point and I will need to write a book on my now to get it all right - until finally now there is a useful HVAC book.

Saladin before the Crusade

This is a scholarly book, which I found rewarding for its lucidity and evenness in tone. The author's thesis is that Saladin's greatest achievement took place before 1185-- before Jerusalem and the Third Crusade. "It was Saladin's restoration of Sunni Islam into Fatimid Shiite Egypt that proved to be his greatest legacy," he states in the Prologue.

In the first ten chapters of the book, we learn about Saladin's political rise, his consolidation of power in Egypt with the support of the inestimable al Qadil al Fadil, and the solid group of advisers and military men that Saladin relied on. The effect of this focus on the men around Saladin-- the various roles they played, religious, military, and administrative--is that it gives a three-dimensional quality to the man himself.

The remaining five chapters of the book deal with Saladin's victory at Hattin and the ensuing Third Crusade, and ending with Saladin's death in Damascus. In the final chapter the author gives an insightful assessment of Saladin, bringing the book full circle to the opening Prologue.

The author has focused his lense on Saladin from a different angle, and from this angle I have learned to appreciate Saladin's achievement off the battle fields and in the realm of religion, namely, Sunni ascendancy.

An eye-opener!

This is history at its best! Dr Azzam gives a fascinating insight into the life of a man who has been misunderstood and misinterpreted for centuries, and he debunks a lot of the "legend". By putting Saladin into the context of his time, the author gives a thorough insight of the currents, struggles and attitudes of Muslims of today: not a lot of the spiritual struggle has changed, and if we want to comprehend what is going on in the Arab world, today, this book explains a lot of it.
The fascination of the Western world with the crusades is shown in perspective to the Muslim world, which, according to the author has always been far more concerned with the devastation caused by the Mongols than with the struggle with the Christians. This book explains,without specifically saying so, the Arab world's attitude towards the West, especially towards the crass materialism that is trying to force its rule unt6o every other civilization.

Not Just for Reenactors

I am not a Civil War reenactor, but I am very much interested in history. I am also not the world's most experienced woodworker, but I do like to spend time in the workshop, building, among other things, my skills. That's why Civil War Woodworking is an ideal book for someone like me. Interspersed through the projects is a fascinating dose of history, both of the Civil War and of the craft of woodworking, accompanied by numerous photos and illustrations.

The projects run the gamut from extremely simple and easy to ones that will maintain interest for more advanced woodworkers, especially the ones who, in the name of authenticity, choose to do all the work with the types of hand tools available in the mid-19th century. Fortunately for power tool junkies like me, the author offers guidance for practitioners of either mode of construction.

And while all the projects are things that could be used in a battlefield reenactment, many are not limited to that purpose. In addition to being dead easy to make, the Five Board Bench would be as at home in a garden as on the field of Gettysburg. The Officer's Field Desk would make a handy work station for a laptop computer, and the Folding Camp Table is a nice upgrade over the kind one normally sets up in front of the TV as a staging area for snacks.

This profusely illustrated 160-page compendium of authentic Civil Ear era woodworking projects opens with two chapters dedicated to providing an informed and informative overview by defining authenticity with respect to the Civil War in terms of reenactments and 'period correct' projects, then surveying the tools, techniques, materials needed to insure historic accuracy. The projects themselves range from benches, crates, ammunition boxes, and a folding camp table, to a bucksaw, folding camp stool, and an officer's field desk. Of special note is the chapter devoted to games. Enhanced with period photography, a bibliography, thematically appropriate web sites, and a useful source list for materials and hardware, "Civil War Woodworking: 17 Authentic Projects for Woodworkers and Reenactors" is enthusiastically recommended for personal and professional woodworking reference collections, and will prove of immense interest to Civil War buffs as well.

Great book for the historical woodworker

This book is a great one for those who want to build the simple items used for re-enacting. I have already built two of the boxes in the book and am working on the Lieutenant Kelly's chair. I have already recommended it to all the guys in my reenacting unit.

A powerful book that will change your view of the Defense Department

After Nazi Germany's surrender to the Allies, sixty of the world's most evil human beings gathered as prisoners at Kransberg Castle twenty miles north of Frankfurt. This building was the former headquarters of Hermann G�ring's Luftwaffe. It was here that American military intelligence officers began the process of deciding their fates. Send them to trial at risk of the gallows. Or spirit them away to war department laboratories in America. (Or do both, and then commute their sentences as if justice did not matter.)

Jacobsen's book tell this story. It's a big one, and she has conducted a massive amount of research and made it readable with a lively narrative style. Some of those scientists did go to face trial at Nuremberg. But others were brought into the U.S. and put quietly back to work.

The newly formed Joint Intelligence Objective Agency, or JOIA, had decided that these scientists were too valuable to the U.S. to allow to fall into Soviet hands. The initiative started by JOIA, Operation Paperclip, was a covert American operation that was one of the most guarded U.S. government secrets of the 20th century. Some of the scientists who were part of it were well known -- Albert Einstein for one. But others had much darker pasts:

* Otto Ambros was a Third Reich chemist who served as director of the German corporation that produced the gas used in the death camps. He was tried at Nuremberg, found guilty of mass murder, and sentenced to eight years. While he was serving time in prison, Operation Paperclip officials arranged for his sentence to be commuted. In 1951, Ambros was hired to work at a clandestine facility north of Frankfurt called Camp King. His work, sanctioned by the Defense Department, ultimately involved the testing of sarin toxins on American soldiers without their knowledge.

* Arthur Rudolph was a Nazi rocket scientist who played a key role in the V-2 rocket program. One of Operation Paperclip's earliest hires, Rudolph, in the U.S., worked his way up through the ranks of NASA to become project director of the Saturn V rocket program. Ultimately, Rudolph was led to confess to war crimes, but his work is all over the U.S. aeronautics technology.

* Kurt Blome, a virologist, pioneered Hitler's secret germ warfare program. Specializing in plague research, Blome conducted human tests on concentration camp prisoners and was a defendant at the Nuremberg Doctors' Trial. Acquitted, Blome was instrumental in the U.S. germ warfare program.

Jacobsen's book tells a dramatic story about morality and expediency, and the ethical quandaries that arise when the former is sacrificed for the latter. She writes with a sense of drama, and has clearly found materials (judging by her source notes) that have eluded other authors. Her book can be recommended to anyone who likes biography, World War II history, or science narratives.

Much of this advance was paid for by the blood, suffering and death of persons held in the concentration camps.There was much controversy in our "overlooking" the crimes committed by German scientists during the war and the run up to the war. The whole truth was not known, and when it was known it was hidden from the American public. Annie Jacobson's book is revealing, and very well documented. Had the full truth been known at the time, we might not have had nearly the progress in warfare (nerve gas for example), or rocketry of which the race to the moon is the best example. The reader will have to decide for himself if we made the right choice. Speaking as someone who worked in the American space program from Mercury to the landing on the Moon in 1969, I say we did. However, after learning the full truth behind the German core of our program, you may feel differently.

Deals with the devils

This book is absolutely, breathtakingly fantastic. I am a German, I always thought that I knew everything about our "dark past", and then comes Annie Jacobsen with this treasure trove of unbelievable, mind boggling new revelations. The period is the same where the narrative of the Monuments Men is taking place, in the rubble of the Third Reich, and there is this American task force searching desperately for the whereabouts of the legendary "wunderwaffen" - and the dark geniuses who built them. The greed for these history changing inventions is so enormous, that rules are bent, laws are broken, monsters brought to the USA. The stories of the individual actors are harrowing and, at times, perversely sickening. A great deal of this information had never before been made public. Endless suspicions are raised (Why did Albert Speer get that light sentence at Nuremberg?). I am an author myself and I wish I had written this jewel. The Monuments Men has been filmed by Hollywood, but this is far more explosive dope. Annie, I wish you get your movie!
