About the Author

David E. Bock taught mathematics at Ithaca High School for 35 years. He has taughtStatistics at Ithaca High School, Tompkins-Cortland Community College, Ithaca College, and Cornell University. Dave has won numerous teaching awards, including the MAA’s Edyth May Sliffe Award for Distinguished High School Mathematics Teaching (twice), Cornell University’s Outstanding Educator Award (three times), and has been a finalist for New York State Teacher of the Year.

Dave holds degrees from the University at Albany in Mathematics (B.A.) and Statistics/Education (M.S.). Dave has been a reader and table leader for the AP Statistics exam, serves as a Statistics consultant to the College Board, and leads workshops and institutes for AP Statistics teachers. He also served as K–12 Education and Outreach Coordinator and a senior lecturer for the Mathematics Department at Cornell University. His understanding of how students learn informs much of this book’s approach.

Dave and his wife relax by biking or hiking, and when not at home near Ithaca can often be found in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. They have a son, a daughter, and four grandchildren.

Richard D. De Veaux is an internationally known educator and consultant. He hastaught at the Wharton School and the Princeton University School of Engineering, where he won a “Lifetime Award for Dedication and Excellence in Teaching.” Since 1994, he has taught Statistics at Williams College. He is currently the C. Carlisle and Margaret Tippit Professor of Statistics at Williams College. Dick has won both the Wilcoxon and Shewell awards from the American Society for Quality. He is an elected member of the International Statistics Institute (ISI) and a fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA). In 2008, he was named Statistician of the Year by the Boston Chapter of the ASA. Dick is also well known in industry, where for more than 25 years he has consulted for such Fortune 500 companies as American Express, Hewlett-Packard, Alcoa, DuPont, Pillsbury, General Electric, and Chemical Bank. Because he consulted with Mickey Hart on his book Planet Drum, he has also sometimes been called the “OfficialStatistician for the Grateful Dead.” His real-world experiences and anecdotes illustrate many of this book’s chapters.

Dick holds degrees from Princeton University in Civil Engineering (B.S.E.) and Mathematics (A.B.) and from Stanford University in Dance Education (M.A.) and Statistics (Ph.D.), where he studied dance with Inga Weiss and Statistics with Persi Diaconis. His research focuses on the analysis of large data sets and data mining in science and industry.

In his spare time, he is an avid cyclist and swimmer. He also is the founder and bass for the doo-wop group, the Diminished Faculty, and is a frequent singer and soloist with various local choirs, including the Choeur Vittoria of Paris, France. Dick is the father of four children.

Paul F. Velleman has an international reputation for innovative Statistics education.He is the author and designer of the multimedia Statistics program ActivStats, for which he was awarded the EDUCOM Medal for innovative uses of computers in teaching statistics, and the ICTCM Award for Innovation in Using Technology in College Mathematics. He also developed the award-winning statistics program, Data Desk, and the Internet site Dataand Story Library (DASL; lib.stat.cmu.edu/DASL/), which provides data sets for teaching Statistics. Paul’s understanding of using and teaching with technology informs much of this book’s approach.

Paul teaches Statistics at Cornell University in the Department of Statistical Sciences, for which he has been awarded the MacIntyre prize for Exemplary Teaching. He holds an A.B. from Dartmouth College in Mathematics and Social Science, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Statistics from Princeton University, where he studied with John Tukey. His research often deals with statistical graphics and data analysis methods. Paul co-authored (with David Hoaglin) ABCs of Exploratory Data Analysis. Paul is a Fellow ofthe American StatisticalAssociation and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Paul is the father of two boys.

Great Stats Book!

Ok, so I don't like anything even remotely related to math. This Statistics textbook was required for my Statistics class. The examples are clearly laid out and easy to follow. The practice problems are extremely helpful. I'm currently passing my Stats class so I'm thrilled. This is a very well-written Statistics book.

An Excellent Cultural Study

American audiences exposed to the EPL, La Liga or any other league for that matter, often times only get to see 2 dimensions of the game. First, the emphasis on the bigger team names, and second, the game itself. What they often fail to see is the intracacy of the game behind the game - that is, the cultural elements that make soccer overseas so unique, so passionate, and often times, so beyond the grasp of comprehension to the audience that is watching on Fox Soccer Channel.

In Morbo, Phil Ball does a wonderful job of illustrating the cultural background to spanish soccer. And true to form, he effectively illustrates that La Liga is not only about Barcelona and Real Madrid. There is much history between these two clubs but fortunately, Ball doesn't spend all his effort on them. Instead he dives into the history of spanish soccer, starting with English miners, to the history of clubs that no one has heard of outside of Spain, like Recreativo de Huelva.

This is far more a cultural study, than it is a history of spanish soccer. Balls successfully discusses how the two paths combine, and how club support was defined more by class/politics/ and culture, than by a jersey's color. It certainly goes a long way in helping outsiders understand the level of support and the long ties people have to clubs. It is especially interesting in light of how the modern world is shaping the game.

Finally, like many sports leagues, there is history and their is myth. Ball does a service to the spanish game by not buying into the myth of some of the rivalries (Betis-Sevilla, RM-Barcelona, Athletic-everyone else). In doing so, he provides a complete and true picture of how the game has evolved on the Iberian peninsula.

For people interested in understanding how events actually shaped the game in Spain, this is a must read. There are plenty of books out there about Real Madrid and Barcelona, but there are few books that look at Spanish soccer with this depth and refreshing candor.

History of Spain

This is a remarkable book. Whereas it took Jimmy Burns of the Financial Times a whole book to wax about Barcelona, Phil Ball does it beautifully in a few pages. Morbo is a superb exploration of Spanish politics, Spanish geography, and the one thing that unites all of Spain-football. Spain is, it seems, a poor advertisement for the sort of national unity that dominated 19th. century Europe-Germany, Scotland, and Italy and later, India and China. Phil Ball's book exhibits a child-like happiness when he visits soccer stadiums in the forgotten corners of Spain. He exposes the hypocrisy of Basque politics, the long shadow of Francisco Franco in Spain and, finally, the exuberance of that Catalan city: Barcelona. This is a must-read for people who are interested not only in the cuisine of a particular peoples-Basque and Catalan- but in their vibrant history beyond the kitchen, beyond the football pitch as well.

The Spanish labyrinth seen through the prism of football

Anyone who doesn't know much about twentieth-century Spain will be surprised by this book from the first page, because it is not simply about Spanish football-soccer but about the widely divergent regional footballing traditions that converge every weekend in the stadium. The progression of chapters (Huelva, Bilbao, Barcelona, Madrid, Seville) is, of course, chronological (following the founding dates of major clubs from the past and present) but also a device to ease the reader into the myriad political and cultural undercurrents that flow beneath the surface slickness of Spain's Primera Liga, which is now beamed worldwide via cable.

This is a great introduction to Spanish soccer for anyone bewildered by the Catalans rooting for Germany during the 2010 World Cup. The author, a British expat, provides the necessary lens adjustment for the outsider looking into this cultural product that now sells itself on a world market but is still dominated by deep-rooted meanings and symbols that are often imperceptible from abroad. The chapter about the national team's chronic underperformance is, of course, now seriously outdated after a European Cup and a World Cup, but the "morbo" surrounding Bilbao-Real Madrid games or Barcelona-Espanyol matches certainly isn't.

Like a Seminar Class

Imagine that you are taking a senior undergraduate seminar class, and the professor has picked out about a dozen recent social science papers (1/3 authored by Angrist) with econometric analyses in order to teach the various statistical methods that you learned in your econometrics class. That is what this book feels like. The topics of the papers try to answer causal questions such as, “Does low cost or free health insurance improve health outcomes?”, “Does attending a highly selective private university lead to higher earnings compared to a less competitive public university?”, and “Do charter schools increase student test scores?” The authors introduce the background for each paper then describe their favored econometric techniques to determine the answers (randomized trial, regression, instrumental variable, regression discontinuity, and differences-in-differences). The first 3 techniques are covered extensively in most introductory econometrics textbooks, while the last 2 are much less covered. A few other econometrics topics are sprinkled throughout the text.

For those with an economics degree or a very good grasp of statistical analysis, this book can be a nice refresher on econometric techniques used to determine causal effects through experiments or quasi-experiments. A more advanced treatment (with linear algebra and calculus) of the same topics can be found in the authors’ other book “Mostly Harmless Econometrics”.

For those that are upper level economics or social science majors in college, this book can serve as a supplement to an econometrics or advanced statistics class by providing real examples of econometrics in action and act as a bridge to understanding econometrics research articles. The book seems to be aimed at the college student that has had at least 1-2 classes of college level statistics. Even though the hard core math that would be found in an econometrics textbook is left to the appendices, there are plenty of equations and mathematical constructs in the main text that require a fairly solid understanding of math to fully appreciate the analysis.

For the general public that may have had a statistics class in high school or less, the analysis will likely be too difficult, however the introductory comments and conclusions for each paper may be of interest. This book is not likely to be found in most public libraries. There is some humor and historical notes to offset the heaviness of the material.

A very well-written book. Clear, interesting and an enjoyable read. There is sufficient mathematical formulaic representations without overwhelming those who are new to the literature. For those who have a good background, it enhances the comprehensibility of the connections between formulas and methods involved in causal inferential statistics.

like Mostly Harmless is extremely well written

Short review: If you have their other book, "Mostly Harmless Econometrics," and find that one sensible, don't buy this book. This is a much simpler version of that book, in essence. Mastering 'Metrics, like Mostly Harmless is extremely well written, but this one is probably too simple to be useful past your 1st or maybe 2nd econometrics class.

About the Author
Barbara Rogoff is UCSC Foundation Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She has been a Fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford, a Kellogg Fellow, and Editor of Human Development. Her books Apprenticeship in Thinking (OUP, 1990), Learning Together (OUP, 2001), and The Cultural Nature of Human Development (OUP, 2003) have received awards from the American Psychological Association and the American Educational Research Association. Her current book, Developing Destinies, deepens the ideas presented in her previous books, building on her three decades of research on human development in a Mayan community in Guatemala.

Barbara Rogoff received the 2013 Award for Distinguished Contributions to Cultural and Contextual Factors in Child Development, from the Society for Research in Child Development.

Wonderful Child Development Book

I used this book during my graduate program and still use this book today! I found it VERY helpful in the study of human development and would recommend this book to anyone studying child development!

Essential reading for any scientist concerned with human neurodevelopment.

We cannot understand the structure and organization of an adult human brain if we cannot account for how it developed. This beautifully written summary of a vast amount of developmental ethnography demonstrates the great diversity of human development, embedded as it is in specific cultural practices. This book should be the springboard for a host of human cognitive and neuroanthropological studies.

Culturally Complicated, But Brilliant

Rogoff's acclaimed concepts about how human development and culture naturally intertwine unfold in a highly intricate matter within this text.

Like Jerome Bruner, her prose can overpopulate itself with too many techy terms for the average educator; however, if you can push through the woods of her thick style, you will uncover many truths about culture.

As she puts forth, culture springs from the natural progression of social history and interaction. Each culture possesses its own scripts and nuances on what exists as "typical" development.

Vague and nearly useless.

SAVE YOUR MONEY. This 62-page booklet is not worth whatever price you find it for. It mentions all the things that make a great pick pocket, but doesn't tell you how to achieve those things. In fact it even refuses to teach you things outright!It actually mentions them, then tells you it will not be covered! Things that should logically be covered in depth are skimmed and ignored completely.
Quote: " I have purposely not referred to the manner in which your hand should operate in the pocket, nor have I provided specific magic tricks to use in conjunction with pickpocketing. I have not given you specific instructions on removing many items such as belts, cufflinks, bracelets, necklaces, etc. which can be removed without detection..."
So what is the point of producing an instructional text if it doesn't teach you anything? When it wasn't being vague it was telling you painfully obvious things about pick pocketing that it seems everyone would likely know.
Don't waste your cash or time with this one.

Horrible, I knew more before I read this book

I knew more before I read this [bad]book, this book is so bad it decreased my knowledge. This book gives theories on pickpocketing, at the end the author actually says he didn't include any step by step or detail instructions to pickpocketing because each pickpocket must go his own way (why read this then?), also pickpocketing is illegal and shouldn't be used illegally (the 2 reasons he didnt include any information on pickpocketing in his pickpocket book) All he says is you must get in his pocket but not let him feel you!! Drrr!! Thanks!! Anyway, I suggest the book Techniques of the Professional Pickpocket by Wayne B. Yeager. I have seen this on [website] many times before. That book is great.

Enter the world of Office 2016

I thought that moving to Windows 10 would be a leap, but with the aid of an excellent Dummies book I was in good shape. On the other hand, Going to Office 2016 from my "pre-ribbon" Office was like climbing Everest. I guess I had fought the no-ribbon battle for so long I had refused to look at the advantages off the "new" (for me) format. It took this book, and the world having moved on, to help me tonot only accept the ribbon, but see it' advantages. I recommend this book to fellow hold-out (if any survive) as a fine way to gradually undertand the tructure and application of Office 2016.

This is a great book. Explains in very easy language and examples Office 2016. The screen shots with arrows to identify specifics are
spot on. The exercises clear and skill building. I'd recommend to anyone interested in learning or becoming familiar with; work, excel,
outlook, power point. Worth purchase.

I like the "seniors" approach. I learned a lot as I had recently purchased a new computer and was going from Windows XP with an old version of Office. Still I had questions for which I couldn't find answers in this book. I would still recommend it though.
