Paul Murray�has been visiting Zimbabwe for over 25 years and now spends half of the year there living amongst a community of the country’s key tourism specialists. He is actively involved in promoting tourism to Zimbabwe and was shortlisted in the 2011 Zimbabwe’s Achievers Award for services to Zimbabwean tourism. He is a contributor of articles to Zambezi Traveller, and is an advisor and freelance feature writer for several other publications and tourism related ventures.

Canoeing on the Zambezi

“Words like ‘tranquil’ and ‘serene’ leap to mind as you gently paddle downstream wending your way round pods of hippo and marveling at how close you can get to that elephant quenching his thirst on the bank. Binoculars and cameras will be used to the full with the dazzling array of riverine birds and wildlife on offer but don’t put your paddle down for too long or you’ll find yourself drifting a little too close to hippo territory. You may well experience a ‘leg-over’. This entails all the canoes coming alongside each other with everyone hooking one leg over the side of the next to form a raft and then simply drifting down the river. An essential ingredient of this maneuver is breaking open the cool-box for a couple of beers. One of my enduring memories was the twin reflections on an almost mirror like river of the sun setting in one direction, with a rising full moon in the other. Nights are spent on the bank or on a sandbar often with only a mosquito net between you and the stars.

One major selling point for these canoeing/walking/camping trips is generally left out of the brochures. The guides are invariably ‘larger than life’, tend to have a brilliant sense of humor and are excellent raconteurs. With just a little prompting, the evenings you spend around the campfire listening to their outrageous and hilarious stories of life in the bush will stay with you forever.”

Don't leave home without it

This is a very useful book if you're going to travel to Zimbabwe. Lots of good information, especially about the history, what to bring, dealing with "street politics" (i.e. traffic stops), etc.

It's very up to date at this time (published September 2013). If you're going to Zim, get the book!

This book provides a very comprehensive view of today's Zimbabwe. It is much more than a travel guide with insights into the country past and present. There are hardly any travel guide books on this country alone and this is a very thoughtfully written one.

Maryann Jordan you have written another immaculate story, that will render your readers speechless. Gabe story is about love, loss, trust, survival, friendship, brotherhood and community. The main characters as well as the secondary characters will become family and will take residence in your heart. You will be thrilled to hear about the shenanigans these characters get into. Gabe and Jennifer's connection was undeniable but she made him earned her trust, and affection while protecting her heart and her little brother. Gabe knew he found his home and his family when Jennifer and Ross invaded his heart. He found the missing piece and vowed from that moment on, that he will love and protect both Ross and Jennifer no matter the consequences. Jennifer is one of the sweetest character's you will meet. She is kind, independent and has a pure heart of gold. Gabe is divine; he will take your breath away, especially with his compassionate and protective demeanor maintaining his dominant personality. Gabe's story is sweet and endearing, it shows no matter your situation, love will find you and lead you to your safe haven. Open up your heart and take a chance, if you don't the most precious gift in life could pass you by. Luckily for Gabe he needed a breath of fresh air at the right time. MaryAnn as always your writing is magnificent and you truly are a goddess with words. I look forward to your next book and your amazing characters. Fantastic start to a new series!

I saw Susan Stoker's release day wishes for this author on Facebook today and, since she is one of my favorite authors, I figured if she thought it was good, I should try it. I was not disappointed at all. I loved this book! There is heart, compassion, love, heat, sexy military men, suspense, everything you could want, all wrapped up in one book! Hope next book comes out soon!

This will tear at your heart strings!

Things one of those books that will not only knock your socks off, but also pretty much draw out most emotions you can name off the top of your head.
Yeas there are some super hot sex scenes but there are moments that will bring you to tears. You will feel fear for the characters and see how true love for someone can bring a grown man to his knees.
Gabe has seen both the best and worst humanity has to offer. He was part of the special forces and now works for and with his best friends and twin brother for Alvarez Security. He has been to war torn countries and there is nothing he hasn't seen. Until he meets Jennifer. She is pure goodness and spends her whole life helping those in need. She will bend over backwards to make sure those she is looking out for get everything they need.
Jennifer is guardian to her small brother as their parents passed away. She will do anything for him and makes sure he is her 1st priority. When she meets Gabe, he is everything she would want in a partner and when she sees how he quickly takes to her brother and vice versa, the deal is sealed.
Gabe and Jennifer are a match made in heaven. They know it and so does everyone else.
There is a huge threat to Jennifer's life and Gabe is about to learn just how far he will go to keep Jennifer and her young brother safe. They are his family and he would gladly give his life for theirs.
This will tear at your heart strings and you will most likely need tissues. I was actually still crying right at the very end!
Settle in with your wine and box of tissues, you won't want to put this one down until you get right to the end!
Well done Maryann Jordan, I can't wait to see who's story you give us next..

Jean’s illustrations do their admirable best, however. Readers will be pleased that Ethan, Lena, and their friends look like actual teenagers, with Lena’s gravity-defying hair signifying her otherworldly nature. The mental communication between Ethan and Lena shines through strongly and helps solidify their relationship despite the sometimes choppy abridgment of the story. Wonderful-you won't want to leave....

Fast paced book with fleshed out characters and interesting story line. Enjoyed every page!

I've read all in the series and can tell you that this series is definitely special. You fall in love with the characters and the setting...a crash course in southern culture :) I'm truly on withdrawl from this series. I was sick of hunger games at the end but this series...I miss. Sigh. There are some "jumps" in some places but all loose ends are taken care of by the series conclusion. I took a day on each book-you won't want to put them down!!! FYI book 2 was probably the slowest-book 3 was probably my favorite.

Read the books FORGET the movie

delivery was super quick; and exactly as described. However, I "hate" that, of course, this set does not contain the DREAM DARK book the Beautiful Chaos paperback does. Oh well, I'll pick up what I need to know from the dear people that dont understand what a review is and give you the whole story. ha! In addition, forego the movie and wrap yourself in the books; its a well done, multi-layered story.( though the transitions could have been better. I fault having 2 writers and slackers at proofing.)

Thousands upon thousands of Civil War books are available, as American readers seem to have a limitless appetite for that era. If you are looking for the best, read Sandburg on Lincoln. A major American poet takes on one of the best-known, best-loved, most tragic of American historical figures.
When I was a freshman in high school, our English teacher offered us a deal: Anyone who read Sandburg's biography (then in six rather daunting volumes) would not have to attend class for a semester. I took him up on that offer, and was blessed to find my way through Sandburg's gift to the American people. Here is the highly detailed, thoroughly researched, and articulately written story of Abe Lincoln's years among us.
If you have time to read only one of the Civil War books from that burgeoning genre, read this one. You will come to know, from the inside out, this prairie boy who became a towering figure in American history.

A Pulitzer Prize winner's master work.

I believe Sandburg is the only author to win the Pulitzer for both poetry and history. Originally a multi volume history taking decades to complete, this single volume work is an appetizer. I read it in the 1960's and went on with relish to the full multi volume work.
This single volume is insightful, laser like in it's detail yet painting the times of Lincoln in a broad and beautiful brush. Did you know that in 1860 tools could be honed to within one ten thousandth of an inch of accuracy? That magazines and newspapers said the world would change for-ever because of the new "instant" communication nation wide?
This is more than biography. It is a woven fabric depicting the times and life of Abraham Lincoln.

An American Classic on a Classic American

I collect old and rare books. My mother bought me a copy of Sandburg's one-volume edition published in 1954. Honestly, it was slow to start, but once it got to the 1850's, I couldn't put it down. Lincoln's deeds are so often trivialized in our history books. But Sandburg meticulously builds up the background in a way that forces his reader to appreciate the magnitude of the moment, and the importance of each decision--whether right or wrong--that President Lincoln made. It easily took three full weeks to read, but it was more than worth it. I closed the book thinking, "I can't believe it's over!" My advice: Read this book right away, and make someone else read it too. You'll need someone to talk to when you're through!

Terrified of speaking in public

I was terrified... I mean seriously *terrified* to speak in front of people. When *imagining* getting up in front of a group of people, my heart would start pounding in my chest. My entire body would literally tremble. It would feel like I had something caught in my throat.

And that was just from imagining myself speaking in front of people.

Well, every two weeks, the company I work for holds this company-wide meeting. People get up and talk about things like what they've been working on, results, etc. And for over three years I've avoided going up there. Are you kidding? Speak in front of the entire company? Um... No thank you. Not happening.

Don't get me wrong. I *wanted* to get up there and speak. I had a lot that I wanted to say. And speaking to the company was important for my career. In fact, I really wanted to overcome my fear of public speaking because I knew that, if I could just get over this fear and develop the confidence to comfortably speak in front of audiences, I could take my career so much further. It would open up a whole new world of opportunity for me. I could speak at conferences, make a name for myself in the industry, etc.

But I just didn't have the courage. I felt like if I even just spoke in front of a small group at work I would only manage to humiliate myself, end up hurting my career, and feel even worse about myself than I already did.

So, I looked for help. Originally, I looked at The Shyness and Social Anxiety Workbook. I read it. But for some reason, it didn't really help me to work up the courage to put myself out there. Maybe because the book felt too cold and "clinical". Maybe because, as I would later discover, it failed to address some critical elements of my social anxiety.

Anyway, somehow, I found Dr. Aziz. Here was a guy who'd done it; a guy who'd suffered from debilitating social anxiety, just like me, and overcome it.

Like The Shyness and Social Anxiety Workbook, Dr. Aziz teaches that you need to go out there and begin to do those things that terrify you, starting small, getting comfortable with things that only give you a small amount of anxiety, and progressively working your way up until, for example, you're comfortable speaking in front of perhaps even thousands of people.

However, there are two things that differentiate Dr. Aziz's method from The Shyness and Social Anxiety Workbook. First of all, Dr. Aziz teaches several principles that seem to be entirely absent from CBT; things like self-compassion and becoming comfortable with rejection. Secondly, it feels like there's a human being on the other end who actually cares. And this was surprisingly important to me; to feel like I wasn't alone in this.

Anyway, I've been applying Dr. Aziz's method. And here's the proof that his method works. A couple weeks ago, I volunteered to speak in front of the entire company at the company-wide bi-weekly meeting. Now, normally this is just an internal meeting. But literally the day before the meeting, they came up to me and said that they wanted me to prepare what I was going to say in such a way that they could *film it* and *distribute it* to existing and potential clients.

Seriously? As if just speaking in front of the company wasn't stressful enough for me! Now you're going to record me speaking in front of the entire company AND you want to send the recording of me out to literally thousands of people!

Well, the next morning, they called me down to speak. And... well... I knocked it out of the park. I felt way more comfortable and relaxed than I could have ever hoped. And when I'd finished, the son of the founder of the company was so moved that he yelled, "Boom!"

I'm not gonna lie. It felt really good to have faced that fear and to have overcome it. Now, I guess it's on to the next level for me.

This book is exactly what I needed! Only regret is that I didn't find it sooner

This book was exactly what I needed. It feels like I have been under this dark cloud forever and now the cloud is slowly starting to dissipate and I'm starting to feel the warmth of the sun. It makes me want to cry and laugh at the same time knowing that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I'm one of the ones who was actually born with social anxiety, having been diagnosed with Aspergers, mood disorder, pervasive disorder, and chronic depression. All my life I have struggled with extreme shyness. It is so painful. But as I read through the book it gives me so many new ideas. And as someone who thinks a lot, I've thought this dilemma over and over and read about it, this book is so enlightening! Articles and things I've read in the past say, "don't focus on yourself so much, but focus on the other person," or "Just be positive." Others have made comments, "Just lighten up, you take everything too seriously," "Just toughen up," "Just this...Just that." The articles I read don't explain HOW, and these well-meaning people actually make you feel worse about yourself because they make it seem like "What's the big deal?" I, too, felt like other people are "normal" and I am somehow different, even though I see their slips here and there but they seem to manage it well while I can't seem to do so like them. I've always wondered what's wrong with me? I have tried so many different things to make myself "better," but always turned out to be adverse results. As I am reading this, I am just wishing I could've read this 10 yrs ago, it would have saved me so much pain and doing the wrong things to alleviate the pain, although I know this book is not near that old, still though I feel that all that anxiety is kind of melting away. What I've realized in reading this is that I actually can be a fairly extroverted person. Though that label "Shy" was always slapped on me, I naturally want to be around people. And so that is a huge realization! The author has so much understanding and the writing is factual and to the point, no more, no less. But written in such a way that helps you understand your problem and gives you the steps to reason with yourself.

About everything else I am a very rational and reasonable person, and know that my thoughts about social situations are irrational, but somehow, I just couldn't change them. This book has you do mini-experiments to test your existing beliefs, and helps you get to the root of your reasoning. Absolutely wonderful. I'm fairly certain that my confidence will come back quickly, as it already has started. Buy this book if you are really struggling with social anxiety/shyness, you will be so glad you did. Even if you don't have social anxiety, you can always benefit from improved confidence - there are always greater heights to reach.

I am amazed at the wealth of valuable information contained within The Art of Extraordinary Confidence. As other reviewers have mentioned, it is up to you to take what you learn and begin taking massive action to change your life. I am both inspired and excited to begin my new journey as a confident and capable person that is able to accomplish anything I set my mind to. Please do yourself a favor and read this book! About the Author
Brad Snyder, M.D. and his contributing author, Alex Nguyen, M.D. met in 2007 during their fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at the University of Texas in Houston. While studying for their certification, they agreed there was a profound lack of well-organized, comprehensive study guides for this exam. They wrote this guide to fill that void.

Great for ABS oral exams

Great for ABS oral exams. Really recommend it for every candidate. Very helpful, a must before going for orals.

It's OK, could have been great

Me: Recently passed the orals. I used this book and Neff's Passing the General Surgery Oral Board Exam. I also took the Osler course. I read Cameron's 9th edition during residency and had a broad based experience.

The Good: The only book that attempts to simulate the oral 'tennis match' between you and the examiners. The author covers most of the topics seen on the boards, including a few scenarios you may not see during residency but appear on the exam. There's also descriptions of common procedure in the back- they're pretty good, but not perfect.

The Bad: As others note, a distracting number of typos. The author suggests some questionable treatments and diagnostics. He doesn't go in depth for some scenarios- you'll have to use your imagination to turn a scenario into a 7 minute question.

Overall: The author does a decent job considering the breadth of knowledge required for the orals. For a book to be complete, it would need to be gigantic. This book, though, only serves as a starting point. If you *only* used this book, you'd be borderline. Instead, take the scenarios and broaden them. You need to know a few ACLS protocols, not just one, and if a bullet enters the chest / abdomen, be prepared for a variety of injuries, not just the ones the book offers. This book would help you as a starting point for practice orals with colleagues, though you should extend the scenarios and introduce complications.

Recommendation: Considering what's at stake, I'd get the book. The author could, however, make an excellent book by fixing the typos, updating some management, and answering some 'common curveballs' as Neff calls them. If you extend the scenarios in 'How to Win', introducing common complications or alternate diagnoses (left lower quadrant pain becomes volvulus, then perforated cancer, etc), you could make your own solid study guide. For the background knowledge, I suggest UpToDate, eMedicine, NCCN guidelines (free and accurate), and begrudgingly Cameron's (the 10th edition was terrible compared to 9th). Neff's book is annoying because it covers some weaknesses in How to Win ('cuveballs' introduced into scenarios), but then doesn't expound on them. I would NOT pick up an old copy of Safe Answers. The 2011 version should be re-titled Old, Deadly Answers. I don't know if the 2013 edition fixes those errors, but the cancer management was particularly terrible for 2011.

I would also take the Osler course just to get in a proper frame of mind, see some curveballs thrown (and how to handle them), and immerse yourself in the oral's format. Be prepared, though, to have questions on some of the material presented. I wouldn't consider the course to be necessary.

My core book for orals

Recently passed, and used this as my core - read it three times in 3 months preparing, and used it for practice mock orals with a friend. Also used syllabi from one of the major courses, and some old ABSITE notes, but this was the one to memorize. In fact, 2 days before taking the test, I read the entire book as my final review. Other reviews are correct - many spelling / grammar errors, but if that really bothers you I think you should refocus on the content. I found this more readable than the 'passing the general surgery..." book.
