Great for those learning American English

The author takes common American expressions and explains them in an easy-to-read manner. This book made me realize how often we use idioms that may not make sense to those learning English for the first time. Examples include "in the doghouse"; "slam dunk"; "eat your heart out" and "chip on your shoulder."

Strongly Recommended

This book provides a solid foundation for the practicing engineer involved with the econmic evaluation of engineering projects, an area which determines for the greater part, whether projects should be progressed or aborted. The principles are well defined and the examples are easy to follow, rightfully stimulating thinking and not substituting for it, since as we are well aware, engineering projects may vary in size, scope and complexity. I would recommend this book to any engineering student or practicing engineer. Consulting the work of other authors (eg Sullivan) would supplement understanding and appreciation of the subject matter. I gave the book a 4 star rating because of the errors within the examples provided. The principles however, are conveyed so effectively in the text that identification of these errors become easy.

Very Good.

This is an excellent text for an engineering economics class. It concisely explains and demonstrates basic ideas and financial concepts in a logical manner. The only draw back I could detect was the author's nomemclature, which he introduces at the first of the text. If you don't memorize it early on, it becomes difficult to understand quickly. The professor who taught the Engineering Economics class I took was none other than Chan Park himself (guess what the required text was!).

A decent enough textbook to get by with. Some examples are unnecessarily complex, but for the most part it does a good job of explaining everything. Overall, though, if you're an engineer the subject of introductory economics is so easy it doesn't really matter how good your textbook is.

The Art of the Iron Giant - Book Review

The Iron Giant remains one of the most highly-regarded animated movies. It's a beautiful film, and to coincide with the release of the signature edition blu-ray set, Insight Editions has published a book equally as beautiful. The Art of the Iron Giant contains what fans have been waiting for a long time - an in-depth look behind the scenes of the film and it's art department.

The book begins with a foreword by director Brad Bird, who writes about his involvement in the project. The text then discusses the challenges of the film, with focus on the design and animation processes. The artwork in the book varies greatly -- some of it is from a previous incarnation of the film that was planned prior to Bird's involvement; and then obviously the artistic progression into the final visual style you recognize on-screen. Those who know the film will know that it has a unique look which blended a computer generated 3D-character and a traditional 2D environment.

The Iron Giant himself went through various design iterations, and it's fun to see what could have been. Many of the designs are cool-looking, but the final design also gives the character a real personality. Additional chapters show the art of the human characters, as well as the settings in the film (including Hogarth's house and the power plant). Finally, the book concludes with a look back at the legacy of the film and an appreciation of the artists involved in making it a reality. Dozens of team members recall their experiences - including storyboard artists, animators, and composer Michael Kamen.

This is one of those few books that will likely rise greatly in value over time. Sometimes I recommend waiting to buy art books for a few months until the retail price drops and remainder copies go on sale - but in this case I recommend picking this one up as soon as possible because a fresh new copy may be difficult to find down the road (Amazon is already showing a 1-2 month backorder at the time of this review).

Long time coming for a disappointing book.

Came home tonight to find this on my front porch! I have been waiting not just the last 6 months since I ordered it but since the movie came out way back in 1999.
I looked through it over dinner. Felt like something was missing. I think it was not the best idea to feature so much bad art that was done before Brad Bird came to the project. I also felt like they should have included more of the beautiful background paintings that were done for the film. Also, the color script pages were dark and unclear.
I'm a little disappointed.

The book doesn't carry the greatness of the film.

This movie has always been iconic to me. As a book illustrator and animator, I have considered The Iron Giant to be the movie that triggered my interest enough to push me toward a career in storytelling. At first glance, the book brings back all those memories and all those ideas I had when I was in college. But, as I flip through the book, I quickly realize it's just another "art of" book. I will keep it for my collection of "art of" books, but it doesn't seem to offer much as far as making it stand out as a collectible extension of a ground breaking and one-of-a-kind feature film. The Iron Giant will always be the greatest, but the "art of" book will just be another book on the shelf.

About the Author
Bob Dobkin is a founder and Chief Technical Officer of Linear Technology Corporation. Prior to 1999, he was responsible for all new product development at Linear. Before founding Linear Technology in 1981, Dobkin was Director of Advanced Circuit Development at National Semiconductor for eleven years. He has been intimately involved in the development of high performance linear integrated circuits for over 30 years and has generated many industry standard circuits. Dobkin holds over 100 patents pertaining to linear ICs and has authored over 50 articles and papers. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Jim Williams, who worked for Linear Technology for nearly three decades, was a talented and prolific circuit designer and author in the field of analog electronics until his untimely passing in 2011. In nearly 30 years with Linear, he had the unique role of staff scientist with interests spanning product definition, development and support. Before joining Linear Technology in 1982, Williams worked in National Semiconductor’s Linear Integrated Circuits Group for three years. Williams was a legendary circuit designer, problem solver, mentor and writer with writings published as Linear application notes and EDN magazine articles. In addition, he was writer/editor of four books. Williams was named Innovator of the Year by EDN magazine in 1992, elected to Electronic Design Hall of Fame in 2002, and was honored posthumously by EDN and EE Times in 2012 as the first recipient of the Jim Williams Contributor of the Year Award.

Nostalgia, Inspiration, and Innovation

When I started in electrical engineering, transistors and diodes came individually boxed with data sheets, and most transistorized circuits were obviously (in hindsight) reworked vacuum tube circuit designs.
Designs better suited to the strengths and weaknesses of semiconductors arose even as new and better semiconductors were developed. Integrated circuits greatly simplified simple functions, and greatly expanded possibilities for new functions.
The data sheets and application notes published by semiconductor manufacturers were a tremendous wealth of useful information and inspiration.
This book is full of designs, and offers discussion of functionality and design choices for each. It does not teach creativity - but it displays the fruits of some very creative minds.
If you study and understand these circuits, you will come away with some valuable insights which will serve you well.

Waste of money

The content is good but available as application notes for free, online.
So you might be excused for thinking you're paying for some editing. Well no. The application notes are repeated verbatim, including the repeating of material from app note to app note.
If you try reading this as a book you'll be continually rereading the same material. It's a very expensive way of getting the appnotes.
It may be better as a physical book, if you prefer that kind of thing. But as a kindle book it's awful, you'd be better getting the pdfs and using a decent App to search and annotate.

Want to get back to building

This was the first book I downloaded to my new kindle fire hd. I enjoyed the story as I am in the middle of building myself a wood strip canoe. Although my boat is a different style, I loved the challenges of the woodworking that were shared and I could relate to. I didn't give a five star rating only because of the editing. I am a teacher and am really critical about writing and proofreading. It was a great story.....I will be reading the second one soon.

I enjoyed reading Mr

In spite of numerous typos, I enjoyed reading Mr. Wall's ramblings about building his kayak.
I am attempting a similar adventure, and appreciate what he went through.
I am glad he could keep his sense of humor throughout the book.
