A marvelous world regional text

This text makes teaching world regional geography a breeze, not only because of the well structured and knowledgeable approach to the material, but also because of the vast array of additional materials instructors can receive from the publisher. I used this text every year I taught the course and found it surprisingly modular. Each chapter allows the instructor to introduce a new geographic concept area (e.g. medical geography when discussing the African Continent). I can't imagine teaching World Regional Geography with any other text. Moreover, the writing is so good I can easily see people buying it just to have around the house when the news is on. Well worth the price.

Good learning had a price, be it time and money!!

I just finished my college course "Geography of the World" using this book. Personally I found the 10th edition book very useful and entertaining. If you want to LEARN SOMETHING, get "edumacated" has one of my friends who graduated Sumna Cum Laude from Berkeley would say, buy this book. Pony up the money, bite the bullet and enjoy the reading.
This book is for knowledge and education, it is NOT for the slacker who complains because he has to read 10 pages of text every week for his GEO class. I agree that this book might be a little pricey BUT the quality is there. If you can't afford a new one, buy a used one. The book is very well structure and easy to understand, you get out of it what you put in reading it.

This book is priced according to the publisher's investment

As the editor of this book, I suppose it would be fair to consider my response to Mr. Wettstein to be biased. Furthermore, it is difficult to address issues of affordability and value because these purchasing decisions are personal and subjective. I can, however, clarify the mistaken assumption that a paperback version would reduce the price, since a cloth cover doesn't really add significantly to a textbook's total cost. The price that a textbook publisher charges a retail operation is based heavily on the cost of developing and manufacturing the book. In the case of this text, I refer in part to the high cost of drawing and preparing almost 250 high-quality, color maps and diagrams, the cost of licensing from Rand McNally the 13 regional reference maps that begin each chapter, and the cost of preparing over 150 color photographs. Furthermore, all the work done on this text, from concept to finished product, is done in the U.S.A.
Mr. Wettstein mentions what he has gained from the extensive knowledge of the authors, and by doing so addresses one quality of the text that sets it apart from other books like it. Professor de Blij has travelled around the world for the past 25 years in order to make this book as enriching, accurate, and not to mention, as beautiful as it is today. One can imagine his travel expenses and the enormous energy required of him. Yet, the result of the used book market and the other options Mr. Wettstein suggests,is that Harm de Blij and Peter Muller are not compensated via royalties.
Compare the $78.95 with items similarly priced, for example, athletic gear. I cannot believe that the cost of the design, materials and overhead for making sneakers comes close to the investment publishers make, especially with books that depend so much on graphics and photographs. Yet, a pair of sneakers runs close to $100 these days.
As with sneakers, our book may become worn with use, but I doubt that you'll ever need to throw it out. With this textbook, one gets a trip around the world that will last an intellectual lifetime.

SCOTT MIGNOLA became infatuated with Pinocchio after reading Carlo Collodi's THE ADVENTURES OF PINOCCHIO at a very impressionable age. As an adult he decided that the 1883 classic of Italian literature needed a sequel, following the ex-marionette's exploits as a real boy, and so he set about writing one. The result, PINOCCHIO'S FORGOTTEN LAND, was published in 2013 by Dog Boy Productions (dogboypro.com), along with a companion volume of the book that inspired it. Both feature cover and title plate art by Scott's brother Mike Mignola, the acclaimed creator of HELLBOY.

Faithful Follow-up Brings Pinocchio's Story to Satisfying Close

Scott Mignola's sequel to Carlo Collodi's 1883 "Adventures of Pinocchio" is a faithful, not-at-all-ironic homage that extends the story through another series of bizarre, eye-popping adventures to a fully satisfying conclusion.

Collodi's children's novel was actually an edited compilation of serialized stories for an Italian kid's periodical--and differs in many ways from the Disney version most of us are familiar with. Just as the original Grimm fairytales are, well, grimmer than the Disney-fied adaptations, the original Pinocchio is darker, too. To take one example, the whale from the animated movie is a very toothy giant shark (a mile long!) in Collodi's telling.

And it's the original novel that sparks Mignola's imagination and gives him his jumping off point. "Pinocchio's Forgotten Land" hews closely to its 1883 progenitor in style and language--right down to the fanciful 19th century circumlocutions and Victorian (in translation) stock phrases. Mignola also preserves the original's instructive purpose (boys must behave and listen to their elders) and narrative tendency toward dream logic--which children readily accept. It's only unimaginative adults who hold story points up to the light of day and ask, for example, "How can the Talking Cricket be alive in one scene, dead in the next, and (without explanation) alive again later?" Although, being a 21st century man, Mignola can't resist cooking up plausible fairy-tale explanations for some of Collodi's more flagrant narrative leaps.

Similarly, with the benefit of exposure to modern storytelling, Mignola is able to fashion a narrative arc for the two novels back-to-back that is, to a contemporary reader, more satisfying than Collodi's alone. The little puppet's eventual fate lands with a more resonant thud, not to mention greater psychological plausibility, after two novels than the somewhat deus ex machina ending of the first alone. (Although it should be noted that one needn't have recently read Collodi's original to follow the sequel. Mignola has added some only-slightly stilted exposition recapping the key points of the first book.)

For any fan of the Disney film now grown up to wonder how dark and weird the novel might have been, or any fan of modern adaptations based on old fantasy tales (e.g. "Wicked" and its cousins), Mignola's sequel, paired with Collodi's original, makes a quick yet fulfilling read.

Following Pinocchio into the unknown

A sequel to Carlo Collodi's The Adventures of Pinocchio, Pinocchio's Forgotten Land is Scott Mignola's ripping tale of Pinocchio's life after Collodi sets him down. Published together by Dog Boy Productions and gorgeously illustrated by Mike Mignola, the two volumes make a wonderful read. Scott Mignola's choice to tell his story in Collodi's style merges the traditional Italian voice I associate with writers like Collodi and Carlo Gozzi with his unique sense of imagery and narrative, and the effect feels both familiar, and deliciously unhinged by Mignola's sly humor, and gorgeous sense of darkness. The story feels both old and unpredictably new and open to possibility through his images. In this tale about deeds and their consequences, the stakes are high, and danger feels real, at the same time that salvation can almost always be found through chance, or wit, or transformation. Mignola takes us right to the gates of Hell.
As only a great storyteller can do, through his tale's hairpin turns and breathless changes of fortune, Mignola reveals the various characters in Pinocchio's life both as his family, and as parts of his psyche - the cricket and the blue fairy and even the table as spirit guides, as guardians, and loving sibling/mother/friend. The sense that the wisdom and the values that our parents wish to impart to us can eventually be internalized, not just for them, but for ourselves.

Scott Mignola's novel, Pinocchio's Forgotten Land, is an imaginative adventure story following the protagonist of Collodi's original 1883 novel, Adventures of Pinocchio. The writing style is similar to the original fable, which creates a fairy tale atmosphere of unlimited possibilities, where anything could happen. The central themes of human existence are timeless, and Mignola takes us into the darker realms of humanity with a seamless narrative that speaks to the modern reader. The life lessons Pinocchio learns in Mignola's story are universal--be kind, honest, productive, and good. Pinocchio's tendency to be extremely human continues in Pinocchio's Forgotten Land. He still makes bad choices and mistakes, yet his heart and his love for his father are moral compasses that bring him home each time. Beautifully illustrated by Mike Mignola, Pinocchio's Forgotten Land is a multi-layered story that allows readers to explore the deeper significance of Pinocchio's experiences, while also enjoying a rollicking fairy tale with imaginative characters and unknown worlds. It doesn't get any better than this

In an earlier version of this volume I studied it for an entire summer and passed the Master Electrician Exam the first time. That was decades ago.
Anyone interested in the trade would be wise to start here.
When I teach in this area I go beyond the book and focus on the mathematics and also use the volume Electrical Power System Basics--likewise available from Amazon.

Now something people should attend to is there are conflicts between the National Electrical Code and the Code used my the power utility. These have severe consequences for safety. But that is another discussion.
But for starters you may want to study the paper "Dangers of Stray Voltage and Stray Currents" by Donal W. Zipse, P.E.

If you don't feel sure about your electricity projects, if you are uncertain about rules, codes and regulations involved, you must read this book. It is also very easy to follow its explanations. You don't even need any deep knowledge of electric circuits or machinery to put into use all the safe practices described herein. You won't regret this purchase if the electricity projects in your country must follow the prescriptions of the American National Electrical Code.

Excellent does not even begin!!!

I am an apprentice electrician who has done a bit of everything. I have a grand desire to LEARN and this book has continually satiated that desire. I have been reading it in conjunction with an illustrated guide to the NEC and can't imagine how anyone could put the practical in written form any better. I strongly suggest this book for anyone who desires to not only be an electrician, but one with a mind towards doing your job safely. Not simply for self-preservation, but for the safety of client and bystander as well. I must confess that I am not finished with the book, but am gleaning loads of wonderful guidance. EXCELLENT!
