Concise but useful information

This book delivers the most perfect roadmap to an ITIL lite implementation. Exactly what I was looking for. For smaller companies that don't have budget (or need) for a full ITIL implementation, this is it. Worth every penny.

Does the trick for a small org

There are some ITSM professionals I've heard who damn this book because it speaks of "implementing ITIL" and does not address the "value proposition"

True, BUT I'd like to say I thought this book was great!

Why? Because there are so many smaller organisations who need process too. They don't have the time/money to do the heavy analysis of which process when and what's my maturity. These organisations have a gut feel for what they need, understand there's an inevitable support cost and won't spend money measuring that they "know" already. They have agreed ITIL is best practice, so they need some of that.

This isn't high and mighty and doesn't measure value to the business or assess maturity but for a reactive IT in a small organisation I can see the applicability plus I recommend it.

Good high level information

If you have a base knowledge of ITIL and are looking for a "light" implementation of ITIL, this is the book. It has a good amount of detail in it without being overwhelming. This is a starting point for my company so it is the perfect first step. I have knowledge of ITIL v2 and this book outlines the changes with v3; I found this very helpful.

This book is the full exciting account of preparation, landing and seven days of terrifying battle. This is an excellent read and the Baron has a flair with the pen. Captured in 1945 in the Ardennes the Baron was bitterly attacked for his anti-Hitler sentiments as a P.O.W., after the war he became a professor of law at the University of Wurzburg. This book does have a small photo section. Bound in full cloth using an exact copy of original dust jacket published originally in 1958!

A classic wartime memoir!

This is one of the rare times that I have read a book in two successive days and there is a good reason. The battle of Crete remains one of the least known episodes of World War II, but it is extremely significant since it marked the absolute zenith of the Wehrmacht's might, just before it embarked on the disastrous Operation Barbarossa. Nothing seems to escape from von der Heydte's attention: the historical background of Crete, the landscape of the island and the personalities of his own soldiers whom he describes with vivid pictures. Von der Heydte was a battalion commander of the dreaded and elite German paratroopers who assaulted Crete against its British, Australian, New Zealander and Greek defenders in May 1941, and although he didn't fight in the crucial Maleme sector but in the neighbouring Galata-Canea area, he witnessed the whole drama of the battle. The operation "Merkur" was the brainchild of German General Kurt Student who had taken every possibility into consideration but then everything turned out contrary to plans and expectations. The author describes in excellent detail the combat jump, the chaos of the first hours on Cretan soil, the fierce enemy resistance, the painful losses, the hunger, the thirst and the desperation of the first days when the battle was hunging on a balance, so that the Berlin radio made its first mention of the attack on Crete five days after the beginning of the battle! Here and there a paragraph is a real gem of literature proving that the baron's pen is at least as mighty as his sword. The chapter "The Dressing Station" is one of the best I have ever read. Humour, horror, human relationships, personal drama and the solitary burden of leadership in battle are interwoven in a marcellously told story, which does not omit the broader view from the Generals' aspect. Von der Heydte has written a real masterpiece of military literature, although he was fighting from the side of an evil regime.

Riveting tale told with literary flair

Baron Friedrich August von der Heydte's "Daedalus Returned" is a short (only 186 pp) yet dense and riveting personal account of the events leading up to and including the Fallschirmjaeger (German paratroop) invasion of Crete in 1941. The combat itself started with a daytime drop 20 May and ended on 27 May with the capture of Canea (Cretin capital) and evacuation of remaining British and Australian troops. It was by all accounts (both German and Allied) a complete success on the part of the German paratroopers - this the first of its kind capture of an island stronghold by lightly armed paratroops; triumphing over larger numbers of more heavily armed defenders. As other reviewers have noted, von der Heydte is a quite gifted writer; his prose flows with considerable ease and lilt. The prose presented in "Daedalus Returned" comes from a clearly educated man who not only has a way of recounting historical facts, but with flair achieved by few other soldiers of his or any other time. "Daedalus Returned" is not only a gripping war story told from a mid-level commander but also a tour of Greek mythology to some extent as von der Heydte introduces the entire story in the context of the Greek mythology surrounding Crete, its mythical minotaur and Daedalus, the Greek architect that supposedly built the great labyrinth that housed the minotaur. The title "Deadalus Returned" eludes to the paratroop drop of idealistic adventurers coming to Crete, a place where by legend Daedalus escaped the labyrinth by flight to survive the minotaur. Von der Heydte continues his mythological theme throughout the book, although the story from chapter 2 onward is focused on his troops and their activities.

While short and very focused in content, "Daedalus Returned" is a quick and compelling read worthy of the short time one will spend to read it. Anyone at all interested in airborne operations should read this book - it comes from a man who was quite anti-Nazi, an educated and idealistic paratrooper, who saw the promise of airborne troops and strove to prove his thesis in combat. "Daedalus Returned" could have been written by a British or American commander to describe similar activities of their airborne troops (e.g., a condensed version of Jim Gavin's book "On to Berlin"). It doesn't steep of German perspective, but rather of a soldier's perspective. Highly recommended; 5 stars.

A vivid portrait of a lesser known campaign

I have read several first hand accounts of WWII, with a special emphasis on the German perspective. With this in mind, never have I encountered a book so well written as Baron von der Heydte's. The language is clear and very descriptive, allowing the reader to easily slip into the Cretan setting the author lays out. It is apparent that von der Heydte was a deep intellectual thinker as he frequently makes referencees to Greek mythology, and takes time out from the action to discuss his feelings on the morality and insanity of war. His description of the fighting on Crete is first rate and leaves little to be desired. What is also pleasing is that he relates his innermost feelings to the reader throughout the text, giving a truly human side the German fighting man. Little emphasis is placed on Nazism and I think this is a result of the deep intellectual that he was. He saw though much of the propaganda of the Third Reich, yet still performed his duties a proffessional German soldier. In Baron von der Heydte we find a very honorable man indeed, and one cannot help but admire his character. If you a looking for a rare, first- hand account by a fine soldier, do not pass this book up.

This is the book I've been looking for...

The most comprehensible, in-depth book on the subject of pranayama that I've yet found. Even more informative and accessible than B. K. S. Iyengar's "Light on Pranayama." As it is a more advanced yogic practice, pranayama can be somewhat difficult to explain and even more complicated to perform. Lysebeth has spared no secret and presents the processes involved in a clear, straight-forward manner. No hocus-pocus. Just the facts. This is the book I was looking for on these more advanced yogic practices.

Never thought pranayama would have such an impact on my life

I am a freediver (i dive without bottle). That sport requires an extreme concentration and capacity to handle stress. Pranayama is a known technique to improve diving performances because if you don't panic you will stay longer under water. However when i started to read the book i discovered that pranayama was usefull far beyong the scope of this book. By better controlling my body I came to reduce stress, diminish any pain i could have, be better at presenting courses (I am an IT trainer) and to increase my concentration.
The introduction to the book attemps to link science to yogist technics, but it's badly done and frankly could have been spared.
Fortunately most of the book covers the pranayama technique. The postures, which are illustrated with pictures greatly help to succeed in the technique. Some exercises had powerful effects on me such as lowering my heartbeat, increasing at will of skin temperature, tickeling effects in differents parts of my body or simply helping to fall asleep.
The book has opened a new perspective in my life. It helps me to feel better in my body.
If you have some knowledge on yoga, you can safely buy the book. Else you need to learn some basic postures to effectively make the exercices. You can take some class or buy from the same author "Yoga self Taught".

A bit disappointing -2 1/2 stars

A disappointing outcome for a highly anticipated new book in this beloved series. I'm pretty sure that I own every book that Hannah Howell has ever written, and have really enjoyed this series in particular. This 7th book starts off with a "meet cute" moment; Bened Vaughn, our Hero, meets our heroine Primrose in the woods. She has a gun in her hands and repeatedly tells him to stop moving. He assumes she is afraid of him, but she really just doesn't want him to step on her spectacles. The H is big, dark and handsome; the h is tiny, blonde, and wears glasses - adorable! As usual, this author writes enjoyable characters and an interesting story line, but there were too many inconsistencies for me. *SPOILERISH* Having the h wear spectacles would have been a cute touch, but after their initial mention, they seemed to disappear. Primrose never takes them off, not while sleeping, not while making love; they don't even fall off when she is abducted! A missed opportunity right there- the lenses could at least have gotten all steamed up when Bened kissed her! It was also established early in the book that the h's brother didn't know that their father was dead - however, when the siblings find each other...nothing. No mention of poor, dead papa; no grief stricken reveal, just...* crickets*. I then had a real "wait, what?" moment near the end of the book. Primrose is being held captive in a church, about to be forced to marry a repugnant old man of her evil aunt's choosing ( this aunt is so villainous throughout the book, it borders on cartoonish ). Our intrepid heroine is at the altar, when the chapel door was thrown open, and Bened strode down the aisle. We later see the scene from Bened's point of view - He quietly slipped inside the church and crept down the aisle. WELL? Did he stride or did he creep? Hannah Howell has been an auto-buy for me for many years, and she will remain so. I really just wanted Bened's story to be better than this. I received this ARC from Netgalley for an honest review.

Wonderful Series - Love It

First of all - I love this series and Ms. Howell’s family of Wherelocke’s and Vaughn’s are so totally unique, creative and totally imaginative it’s hard to have to wait for the next books detailing this amazing family.

Right from the start we are introduced to Lady Primrose Wooten who is in a desperate search for her brother now that her beloved father had died under mysterious circumstances. If she cannot locate her brother in time, her odious aunt and uncle are attempting to marry her off to a very sleazy man who is rumored to have killed his last three wives. Having been unseated in the woods, she is in dire straits without her spectacles and horse. Thankfully, Sir Bened Vaughn who has a knack for calming and a sixth sense of danger has come to her aid and offers his services to Primrose.

Bened has been on his own for some time, usually hired to protect and keep safe the heirs of nobility. Having saved the life of his last client’s heir, Bened has been rewarded with a title and lands by a grateful father. On his way to inspect his new lands he runs into Primrose. Something about Primrose stirs something primal in his blood, and after hearing her story, he feels honor-bound to assist her in her search.

Filled with intrigue, danger, and a simmering sensuality Bened and Primrose’s adventures are fraught with all kinds of hazards as her vengeful and psychotically evil aunt is determined to rid herself of one more impediment blocking her way to riches and power. Naturally, the call goes out to Bened’s many relatives and with their assistance and advice, Bened and Primrose manage to keep up with the evil machinations of her killer aunt.

Bottom line: Excellent read - fast action - simmering sensuality - plus fabulous characters - what more does one need!

Exciting Read

This was an exciting read that is part of a series, but can be read as a stand alone book. The characters and storyline kept my interest because a gifted MS Howell knows how to tend to her craft.
You know that this author tantalizes the reader with lots of adventure, mystery and sexual tension. It makes one want to keep reading until the very end. The hero in this next tale of Wherlocke family, is Sir Bened Vaughn. He's handsome, gifted, dangerous and so hot it will make you think of naughty things. Bened did not grow up titled, but he's earned his way with the sweat of his brow. He's not so high in the instep, but he layed back and in control. So when Bened meets the lovely Lady Primrose Wooten on the same road as he (she's fallen off her horse) and looking for her glasses and offers his help. Primrose comes up with a pistol aimed at Bened to leave her alone and go on down the lane (so to speak). But being a noble man, he just can't seem to do that. Bened gets the story out of the lady, and says he will be her protection, and find her brother that is missing.
You will want to find out how both of stubborn people try to keep from falling in love, but fate is fickle, and tries to throw lots of fences in their way. Especially the nasty relatives of Primrose who are bad to the bone.
