This insightful novel is a taut study of the self-contradictory mind living by chance while thinking it can get away with anything. Jim Nashe is a frivolous Boston fireman who needs music as a life crutch. His wife abandons him just before his father dies, leaving him money that he squanders aimlessly while driving around America. Near desperation, he meets a bitter young itinerant gambler, Jack ("Jackpot") Pozzi, who lures him into a losing poker game with two shady recluses, Flower and Stone, on their Pennsylvania estate. Nashe and Pozzi must retire their debt by building a stone wall on the premises: what this Herculean labor does to them is the novel's leitmotif. An interesting story, but some may object that the journalistic prose merely tells the story instead of showing it.

Smashing the instruments changes the music

I don't know if I necessarily enjoyed this book (or any Paul Auster book, for that matter). The enjoyment comes from the questions I ask myself after I've put the book down. It is not an enjoyable reading experience, but rather a contemplative one. In that regard, it is a highly successful piece of art.
The story appears to be relatively simple. One man goes driving. He meets another man on the road. The two of them meet some eccentric millionaires. The four men play poker. Then two men build a wall. It is almost nonsensical now that I look back on it. But the story's not really the thing (it never is in an Auster book). So don't go looking for closure, and don't expect easy answers. It's all just an excuse for some finely written meditations on the nature of fate and the restrictions of freedom.
Auster's writing style is enigmatic. There is a faux-coldness to it, appearing at first glance distant and reserved. Closer inspection, however, reveals much humanity and passion in his prose. I've always had suspicions that his surname is really an ingeniously calculated pseudonym, for any austerity in the writing is both sincere and ironic. That's a neat trick to pull off, and, to my mind, his greatest strength as a writer. In this example from his oeuvre, he gets the balance just right.

When fate rests on the flip of a card........

Auster has a way with a certain type of character-one who is both on the fringe of both society and sanity both. They are not often very likeable or sympathetic characters, but they always are engrossing characters.
Jim Nash's veneer of sanity breaks when an unexpected windfall from the father he hates kicks out what little emotional support kept him on the straight and narrow and converts him into a wandering, nomadic drifter with his own transportation. In the midst of his journeys he meets Jack Pozzi, also a wanderer-sans transportation. Pozzi suckers Nash into an questionable gambling adventure that backfires, leaving them with a debt that leaves then essentially in a state of indentured servitude. The bulk of the story centers on how they cope with that condition.
The fundamentals of the story, as is so often the case with Auster, are , on reflection, faintly ridiculous. However, it is mood, character and fate that concern Auster, and his-and our-immersion into those topics render the absurdities of the actual story irrelevant.
I've read several Auster books and can't really say I've like any of them particularly, but they do fascinate me. I keep going back for more. The bottom line is what Auster does is ask questions about life and fate-in such a way that you are forced to think about them in your own terms. Auster does not supply answers-heck, not one of his books I've read can really be said to have an ending or resolution of any meaningful sort-but the way the questions are posed will haunt you-and keep you coming back for more.

great convoluted story, full of absurdities and nonsense, extremely enjoyable

As a lifetime worshipper of Paul Auster, I have yet to read his book I would not like. "The Music of Chance" is another one I immensely enjoyed. The life of Jim Nashe, a fireman from Boston, which so far has been good, average and rather unremarkable, with all common joys and problems, is forever changed by the unexpected inheritance he receives from the absent father.

Nashe, left by his wife just before he receives the news about the pleasant sum left for him, decides to leave his daughter with her aunt, quits his job, buys a Saab and starts driving aimlessly through the country, spending time on the road, listening to classical music and sleeping in motels. The money lasts for just about a year of such life and before Nashe manages to think twice, he is left with just about enough to see him through until he finds a source of income. Driving aimlessly, but just about to (reluctantly) decide to get back to his sister and his daughter, Nashe spots a wrecked-looking young man walking alongside the road. On an impulse, he stops and gives the badly beaten man a lift. It transpires that Jack Pozzi a. k. a. Jackpot, is a masterful poker player (and a poker addict) who needs money to put on the table in a very important game, which he fully expects to win. Nashe decides to give Jack his remaining money in hope this adventure can multiply his funds and continue his careless lifestyle for a while.

This is a start of an unexpected string of events, involving Jack's life story, meeting two fabulously rich eccentrics, Flower and Stone (Pozzi and Nashe's opponents in the crucial poker game) who owe their wealth to the winning lottery ticket, and building (in a middle of the woods) the wall of the stones which once constituted the medieval castle in Scotland.

The story is, in a way, based on a similar premise as some other Auster's novels (e. g. Brooklyn Follies): a man changes his life and it takes an unexpected turn. Here, the theme of chance is prominent: lottery, card games, surprising inheritance. But is the message really that chance drives the lives of those who let it do so? After all, Nashe makes conscious decisions till the end of the novel and although he likes to surrender his life to chance, the surrender is never complete.

The cultural references are, of course, numerous and a pleasure to think about. From music to movies (a theme recurrent in "The Book of Illusions") - Flower and Stone compared to Laurel and Hardy - and other allusions to widely understood culture, Auster's works are always a maze to get through, with lots of clues and possible associations, and a pleasure for people who have some education in so called "general culture". I always wonder how much of Auster's original ideas hidden in his novel I manage to catch, how many I miss, and how many are only figments of my imagination. For example, is it only me, or can there be a reference to "Waiting for Godot"? Pozzi's name, road, the two against two, like Pozzo and Lucky (and here the appearance of luck over and over again) versus Vladimir and Estragon, last, but not least, the absurdity of the whole situation with the wall? Well, I guess I will never know, but it was interesting for me to see (or perhaps: imagine) this correlation.

I was not sure what to make out of the very end, which is rather abrupt and seems rushed - this is the only reason why I don't give this novel five stars, but four and a half would be appropriate.

Great ML book!

I would say this book is ideal for anyone who knows some Machine Learning basics and has experience with Python, but it's also a great book for beginners who want to learn about practical ML problems. I've taken Andrew Ng’s Stanford Machine Learning courses in the past, and converting the theories into code isn't always intuitive. However, this book teaches you how to implement those algorithms into code, with lots of practical problems and easy-to-understand example code. Also, the additional graphs and images helped me visualize the concepts. Highly recommended!

I'm relatively new to Python and I would like to say that this book is very friendly to Python beginners. The projects were easy to understand and the code is explained step by step. It was interesting to learn how to work with different types of data like images, text, and audio. I would definitely recommend this book to people who want to get started with machine learning in Python.

Very comprehensive learning method

The USM, or universal study method, can be used to increase reading speed and comprehension. Mathematics and reading are both covered, and most any learning is made up of math, reading, and disciplined practice. I have begun work on this and the revision mapping method to gain more learning while preparing history curricula. Great book!

A Handy Study Resource !

The Manual: A Guide to the Ultimate Study Method by Rod Bremer is an excellent learning resource for students, teachers and parents. Rod reviews important methodologies for memorizing, speed reading, visualization, association and other techniques for simplifying complex tasks. The section on reading covers well known techniques like skimming and layered reading. The important thing in my experience is to practice these techniques over time.

Skimming will work well for reading a belles lettres novel; however, the technique is not really appropriate for studying engineering or high tech subject matter. In the high tech area, practice and problem solving are paramount. In addition, setting up diagrams are critical in solving problems in the integral calculus. i.e. U*V - Integral of V Du and others [Integration By Parts]

There are other areas in higher mathematics where VENN Diagrams are set up in order to view intersecting sets spatially. Some approximations can be made by simply experimenting with values. i.e. [ 1/ infinity~ zero]

In chemistry, solution sets for exothermic reactions may involve the release of heat; whereby, endothermic reactions involve the absorption of heat and melting as in a high temperature melting an iceberg. At some point, doing many problems develops the judgment requisite to knowing what an answer looks like based upon experience in solving similar problems and visualizing the physical phenomena.

Rod's work does require that readers practice these techniques to become fluent in their application. At the end, Rod has some excellent references like Educational Psychology Review, Science and the Scientific American. A strength of this book is that Rod requires successive reinforcement over time. Reinforcement is key-particularly in the primary grades. One of the classic problems in the primary grades is that students may receive a passing score in late spring and forget about a quarter of the material for the commencement of the fall term. Part of the answer to this dilemma is to assign meaningful homework over the summer when school is not in session.

Rod covers breathing techniques, sleep, relaxation and meditation. These aspects are very important although schools do not necessarily cover them in any systematized fashion. Overall, Rod's book is an important contribution in the area of education because it is a comprehensive resource aimed at reinforcement and the workable mechanics of learning transfer.

A Book Worth Studying!

This very fine pragmatic, not pie in the sky, book contains loads useful information on how to improve your reading, memory, rapid math skills, and concentration in general. Some data and exercises may be familiar to some readers but a refresher course is always useful. Other parts contain cutting edge new research and strategies.

As the subtitle notes, this hefty 454 page book is “a guide to the ultimate study method.” And indeed it is. The book divided into five parts: Concentration, Memory, Speed Reading, The Ultimate Study Method, and Rapid Math is a cornucopia of information and practical advice.
For instance, the author points out that as good and efficient as the recommendations are they must be practiced diligently and consistently to reap their full benefit.

This is an excellent gift for high school and college students. Hopefully it will be adopted in college orientation classes as a textbook.

Tangentially, I also believe it could help those not happy in their work places or personal lives. It can help them refocus as they take on new challenges or develop new lifetime goals.

About the Author
Ignatia Broker, who died in 1987, was a member of the Ojibway tribe, the Ottertail Pillager Band, and the A-wa-sa-si Clan. She was born in 1919 on the White Earth Indian Reservation and attended an Indian boarding school in North Dakota. Her higher education included the Minnesota School of Business. Following this, she faced fierce discrimination when seeking employment. In 1966, she began a career with the Minneapolis Public Schools, where she became a member of the Minority Task Force, aiding in the development of the Title IV Indian Studies Curriculum. As a staff writer for the Audio Visual Based Indian Resource Unit of the Minneapolis Public Schools, she authored many stories, filmstrips, and booklets that are a part of the curriculum today. Broker was also a member of many Indian organizations and founded the Minnesota American Indian Historical Society. In 1984, she received a Wonder Woman Foundation award honoring her extraordinary accomplishments as a woman striving for peace and equality.

The quaint style of the writer who gave her account of Ojibway culture while being taken over by the 'voyagers' who crossed the waters, seems very authentic and informative. There is an underlying gentleness of the neighbors who were overtaken by a more mechanically developed culture.

About the Author

Jerry H. Bentley was professor of history at the University of Hawai‘i and editor of the

Journal of World History. His research on the religious, moral, and political writings of

Renaissance humanists led to the publication of Humanists and Holy Writ: New Testament

Scholarship in the Renaissance (Princeton, 1983) and Politics and Culture in Renaissance

Naples (Princeton, 1987). More recently, his research was concentrated on global history

and particularly on processes of cross-cultural interaction. His book Old World Encounters:

Cross-Cultural Contacts and Exchanges in Pre-Modern Times (New York, 1993) examines

processes of cultural exchange and religious conversion before the modern era, and his pamphlet

Shapes of World History in Twentieth-Century Scholarship (Washington, D.C., 1996)

discusses the historiography of world history. His most recent publication is The Oxford

Handbook of World History (Oxford, 2011), and he served as a member of the editorial team

preparing the forthcoming Cambridge History of the World. Jerry Bentley passed away in

July 2012.

Heather E. Streets-Salter is department chair and director of world history programs at Northeastern University. She is the author of Marital Races: The Military, Martial Races, and Masculinity in British Imperial Culture, 1857-1914 (2004), Empires and Colonies in the Modern World: A Global Perspective (2015) with Trevor Getz, and Southeast Asia and the Frist World War (forthcoming 2016). Her current research focuses on communist and anti-communist networks in interwar East and Southeast Asia.

Herbert F. Ziegler is an associate professor of history at the University of Hawai'i. He has taught world history since 1980 and currently serves as director of the world history program at the University of Hawai'i. He also serves as book review editor of the Journal of World History. His interest in twentieth-century European social and political history led to the publication of Nazi Germany's New Aristocracy(1990). He is at present working on a study that explores from a global point of view the demographic trends of the past ten thousand years, along with their concomitant technological, economic, and social developments. His other current research project focuses on the application of complexity theory to a comparative study of societies and their internal dynamics.

Amazing text, amazing deal!

This book contains BOTH volume 1 and 2 for $80. This was the primary concern I had when ordering it, but I am glad I did. As a matter of fact, I bought volume 2 for $74 and decided to return that because this is a much better value.

The way this book is written is wonderful. The passages are long enough to enjoy but short enough to prevent the content from becoming stale.

If you need either volume for your class or you are just a history fan, BUY THIS BOOK!

Once again, THIS CONTAINS BOTH VOLUMES OF THE BOOK.
